
Apparently, the human King Charles is a Jack Russell fan. But in the 1960s, as Cavaliers became more fashionable, poor old King Charles’s were left to dwindle. The two dogs look very similar, only Cavaliers are larger and with longer snouts. The Kennel Club reckons the breed’s demise might have something to do with their rather more popular cousin – the King Charles Cavalier spaniel (above). They have had plenty of royal fans since then: Princess Margaret owned one called Rolly and Queen Victoria’s King Charles, Dash, was supposedly her closest childhood friend. Instead, they were named after the 1600s king, Charles II, whose wavy wig looked a lot like the dogs’ floppy ears. If you were wondering, the canines have nothing to do with the current King Charles. The Kennel Club describes them as being ‘reserved, gentle and affectionate’ and says they normally live for more than 12 years. It’s a shame because these toy spaniels make for good pets. Chronic tail-waggers, they openly show their enthusiasm and love for life. They love people and thrive best when they have lots of human interaction. The only one on display (a male called Del Boy) was neglected all day. Worse still, the Kennel Club’s annual dog breed exhibition took place this week – and according to a report from The Times, the breed was met with very little love. That places the breed squarely on the Kennel Club’s ‘vulnerable list’, alongside other sorts of endangered pooches like bloodhounds, greyhounds and mastiffs.

According to worrying new numbers from breeders, only 14 King Charles puppies were registered in Britain in the first half of this year. King Charles is on the way out – the dog that is.
